Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers - Submission Guidelines

The Journal welcomes contributions from anyone involved with the crafts of weaving, spinning and dyeing.

It aims to provide:

• an interesting and informative magazine for those involved in the crafts
• an opportunity for the exchange of ideas
• instructive articles to encourage experimentation

We welcome

• Feature articles (800 – 1500 words) or short  articles (max 400 words). Please view existing articles online or in a print copy of the Journal WSD for style/content.
• Exhibition reviews (350 450 words) and Book Reviews (max 200 words) 
• Guild Highlights (max 300 words)
• Readers’ Showcase (max 500 words)
• Information on recent developments in weaving, spinning and dyeing and future events

  This page sets out the terms on which we publish contributors’ work and our understanding of our agreement with you.

 Authors of feature articles/Readers’ Showcase can include a short (50 word) biography plus website/social media links at the end of the article.

Please note that we do not pay for articles or images, but we do provide authors and those contributing images with a complimentary digital or print copy of the relevant issue and additional copies can be requested at a reduced rate (subject to overseas postage costs).

Articles can be submitted at any time although The Journal WSD cannot guarantee to publish any article submitted, or to publish an accepted article in a particular issue. We suggest that you contact the relevant editor to agree the outline of the content and its timing before writing an entire article.

Only previously unpublished work can be accepted. The Journal reserves the right to use images on the cover or on the Association of Guilds of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers website. 

We do not accept ‘advertorial content’, but are happy to consider informative content that incidentally promotes a commercial activity.

Note that we will edit text for Journal style, check details etc. and agree any changes with the author. We aim to adopt a ‘light touch’ editing style so that the author’s voice is retained, but we do need to ensure that text is clear and easy to follow.

The publishing process:
● Initial contact via one of the email addresses above: If necessary, the recipient will pass your message to another member       of the JEC team.
● Submissions in Word .doc (.docx) format with images (see below), emailed to the editor who replies to your initial contact.

The details

• Please do not use the footnote feature in your word processing software: instead add the footnote number in [] within the text and add the footnote text at the end of the document
• Please provide clear images (min 2Mb, 300 dpi), with a note of the photographer and/or artist plus a caption, sent as .jpgs or .tiffs. Please do not paste images into the article. We suggest using We Transfer or Dropbox to transfer multiple images
• Modern mobile phones can produce suitably high resolution images, so a digital camera is not necessary
• Please ensure that you have the permission of any individual who is clearly shown in an image and of the owner of the work, gallery etc where appropriate. We may ask you to provide these where relevant
• Please insert image numbers between [brackets] at relevant points in the text and list image captions at the end of the document
• Where appropriate please add a bibliography, list of suppliers and references at the end of your article

Although we do not ask for a formal, signed Author Agreement from contributors, we can provide one on request.
